I am a big new year’s resolution guy. Do I always follow through? No. But there is something magical about a fresh new start. I like the thought of entering a new year with a plethora of new goals and expectations.
2008 was filled with firsts and great accomplishments. My family and I lived in a small log cabin for 6 months on the East Coast Canada (where I grew up); I did my first corporate gig in french; and I have developed two new websites… just to name a few.
I look forward to bringing in the new year with friends and family in San Diego. In 2009, I am going to cook a new meal from scratch each month. Yup, and in case you are wondering, I am by no means a cook. However, I will find yummy recipes and do my best to impress my “chef” wife.
I will also be publishing a book on gratitude. While I have been fortunate to co-author a book with my mentor Patrick Combs and have a few chapters published in other books, this will be a first for me to be the sole author of a book.
So I encourage you all to make a list of all the things that you wish to accomplish in ‘09. In fact, if you dare, you may boldly post them as a response to this blog.
Peace and There YOU are,
Justin

On Dec 8th, 2008 I got to speak the school where it all started out for me. I got to speak at Woodstock High School, the school that I taught for 2 years. The school were I was referred to as “Boudreau” by my students. The school were I often felt like I was not good enough as a teacher. The school were I often felt like I was more a student than a teacher. The school were I learned so much about myself from the students that I taught. The school that I spent countless hours coaching volleyball, co-leading the spirit committee and even was the responsible teacher for cheerleaders (until they found someone more qualified.)
It all came rushing back to me while I walked in the halls. It was a wonderful feeling to remember who I was as a 22 year old new teacher. Now 33, I realize all that I have accomplished and moreover, how none of it would have been possible without the students and the staff of this school.
In fact, the highlight of my day was to visit with Gloria Spafford. She took me under her wing. Without her, I never would have left WHS to pursue my career as a motivational speaker. What made it even more special was that this is Gloria’s last year of teaching. She has taught for a total of 39 years.
I was able to acknowledge her and her heart during my keynote and I am glad I did. Thanks Glow.
